It’s January! Resolutions! EEEK!

I get calls and emails from potential clients every January that are looking to get in shape…fast. I don’t mean to sound negative but most of those people aren’t going to be on a program in 3 months. Most people approach getting fit as a sprint, it’s a marathon. Anyone can lose weight. Can you keep it off?

Getting in shape isn’t about being able to fit into a pair of jeans, it’s about increasing health and confidence. It’s about finding what works for you and incorporating that into your every day life. If you’re trying to lose weight, that is WORK. What most people consider weight loss mode is probably maintenance. Maintaining weight requires breaking a little sweat most days and paying attention to what you’re eating. I also think weight training at least 2 days and week and some flexibility classes are key to maintaining weight especially to people over 35.

If you’re trying to start a program here’s a couple of things I always encourage new client’s to start with:

  • Walk - Walking is a great way to start any program. I tell people to start with 15 minutes at quick pace and a keep adding minutes as you become comfortable.
  • Editing - Make small changes in your diet. Cut back on sodas, alcohol, and snacks. When you go to a restaurant ask the waiter to place half of your order in a doggy bag before it comes to the table. A 12 oz can of soda contains about 120 calories, a can. If you’re drinking the larger sizes and can’t eliminate soda altogether , cut back!
  • Substitute - This one was tough for me, replace mayo with mustard. Eliminate fatty salad dressing and replace with light balsamics. If you have to have soda, replace full calorie with diet. There are so many little edits you can do every day. Every 10-30 calories adds up to a fitter you.
  • Portion Sizes - Read your labels! You would be amazed at the portion sizes. Get a measuring cup and spoons (they’re cheap) and use them.
  • Web Workout 101 - Sign up with WW101. We offer great online exercise classes you can do anywhere you have access to a computer at anytime. You have a choice of weight training, yoga, pilates and many more workout options and resources and tools to help you on your journey.

Good Luck! I have a conversation with myself every day to talk myself into doing what I know is best for my body and mind. If I can do it, anyone can.
